In the winter there are only two campgrounds (Cades Cove & Smokemont) open that time of the year and they don’t take reservations in the winter but that won’t be a problem since there won’t be many other campers there. All the public campgrounds in the park and surrounding National Forests are primitive so don’t plan on hookups.. If you’re entering the park from the TN side I would chose Cades Cove but if you’re coming through Cherokee then Smokemont would be more convenient. Here’s the link to the park website.
Here’s some links to Yahoo groups that might be of some help.
As of yesterday fire bans in the park have been lifted.

If you go in the around New Years you need to find out if you will be able to cross mountain. Around that time they have ice and snow on road and ranger will shut mountain down. You will have to go around. If you stay in Pigeon Forge they is alots of campground there and you can drive to other place. We go to Pigeon Forge all time. Their is a KOA there. Have fun. I go camping around Thankgiving and It got down to 17 in Ga.
So take warm clothes.
